Following its opening scenes in Belgravia, the drama jumps forward in time to London, where the Trenchards are living the high life attending parties thrown by duchesses. For this, Hopetoun House in South Queensferry on the Firth of Forth was used, largely the work of William Adam, who worked on it from 1721 to 1748. Yet, in spite of this, Manderston doesn’t get many visitors, says caretaker Paul Sutton, as he shows me around the property. Episode 2 takes us to another well-used stately home, Syon House in West London. Truly, Baron Fellowes is too good to us. Set in 56 acres in the Borders town of Duns, Manderston is about an hour’s drive from Edinburgh, and is a fascinating place to visit. In addition, all the aristocrats have two houses – one in Belgravia and one in the country, so we needed to find all of those.’, Our story starts in Brussels in 1815, at the Duchess of Richmond’s ball on the eve of the Battle of Quatre Bras, days before Waterloo. It’s long been a popular location, seen in the Fellowes-scripted Gosford Park (2001) and Vanity Fair (2004), as well as The Crown and the not-very-fondly remembered Peter’s Friends (1992). Belgravia country is of course the setting and ambiance similar to that in which the novel Belgravia is set – the posh houses, manor homes with plenty of land and horses and carriages sweeping inhabitants up the gravel driveway. Interior scenes were filmed at Manderston House, while 4 Moray Place was used for the Duchess’ bedroom.
