Workman produces more successful operas, Two Merry Monarchs and Orpheus and Eurydice. Savoy opera was a style of comic opera that developed in Victorian England in the late 19th century, with W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan as the original and most successful practitioners. A Musical version of the play starring Denis Quilley and Cicely Courtneidge played at the theatre in 1964. However, due to Emden increasing his projected fees in 1880, Carte dismissed him – leaving Emden to sue (and subsequently win), for wrongful dismissal. He brought updated versions of operas to audiences, as well as the popular adaptation of 'Treasure Island' which starred Arthur Bourchier as Long John Silver and was revived every Christmas until the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939. They were powered by a 120-horsepower generator (89 kW) that was on open land by the theatre.
W. J. MacQueen-Pope commented, concerning the curtain raisers: This was a one-act play, seen only by the early comers. Irwin Shaw’s play The Assassin runs at the Savoy at the end of the war.

He hired Collinson & Locke to create an Italian renaissance styled interior instead, using white, pale yellow and gold for the main décor. The existing theatres of the time used garish interiors, but Carte didn’t want cherubs, deities and mythical creatures to adorn his theatre.
