I was introduced to Fawlty Towers when it originally aired, and adored it-- so much so that we have the complete set (on VHS no less, and introduced our kids to it at a tender age.) Not a book dedicated to rehashing all the same information you can find out from a thousand other sources about the Python years, right?

Not nearly enough digs at Michael Pallin and not nearly. (His brilliant follow-up series, Fawlty Towers is mentioned to a lesser degree, unfortunately.). You are going along enjoying yourself and having the feeling that this is all leading to a certain point, but just as you arrive at that point, blam- it's over. movies out of The Hobbit) and now it is happening in publishing.

I expected to hate this one based on some of the reviews, but the bitterness -- which, let's face it, is a trait he's long been known for -- really is nowhere near as pervasive as some have made it sound. It's not a book about the conflicts and dramas behind the scenes at the height of his career, is it?

I understand that this was only a portion of his career, but I would think it was as significant at least as his early work. Also if you are interested in the mysteries of process and the percentage of happy accident that goes into creative success there's plenty of that too. There is never a pulse of sense of joy and even the most fascinating moments are told with such a dour lifeless tone as to make me feel his intent was to bore and annoy more than entertain and illuminate.
