I think that added to his need not to fail at his relationship wanting to keep Soo Wan in his life when it was obvious she loved another man. It seems to me that “disappearing” by doing work in Africa was doing penance of a sort for Ji Woon, as however one looks at it he was guilty of a serious crime (hit & run), and leaving him in the picture was probably something the writers were not comfortable doing.
